About The DDYP

The aim of the DDYP is to improve the quality of life of hard to reach young people in Derwentside. We do this by raising their aspirations, building self-esteem and offering them new opportunities which help them to build a better future.

Our office is open part-time 5 days a week. Young people are welcome to call in for support, help with job searches, CV writing, crisis support or just a chat with a friendly face, but it’s probably better to call first to check if there’s anyone in at the time you want, in order to avoid disappointment.

What We Do

Detached Work

Detached work is the core of our work helping us to reach out and engage sometimes challenging and marginalised young people. Our workers make contact with them in their own environment i.e. parks, bus shelters, street corners etc.

Once a trusting working relationship has been established young people are offered alternative/diverse activities aimed at improving their physical and emotional wellbeing. They are encouraged to take ownership of the activities from planning, fundraising and taking lead roles.

Residential Courses

Our 4 residential’s a year give young people the opportunity for new learning skills away from peer pressure, enabling them to open up to qualified workers who are then able to address issues either in groups or individuals. By providing new experiences, they then feel confident to move on to other opportunities.

Workshops

In addition to our residentials and activities, we run workshops in the villages surrounding Consett. These target current issues such as sexual health, healthy eating, drug/alcohol misuse, teenage pregnancy, life skills and confidence building. This list is not comprehensive – we are a needs lead Project.

Meet The Team

We have a fantastic team of individuals who all play a vital role in making sure Derwentside Detached Youth Project can offer our services to the young people in the local area. From the Chairman to staff to the volunteers who spend their own time helping the project, a team which allow for all of this to be possible.
